Guelph Chamber Hosts Ontario’s President of the Treasury Board at Economic Roundtable

For Immediate Release | August 10, 2017

Guelph, August 10, 2017: Today, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce hosted the Hon. Liz Sandals, Ontario President of the Treasury Board & Member of Provincial Parliament for Guelph for a roundtable discussion with the business community and key stakeholders. A number of key issues were raised around:

  • The cost of energy
  • Access to talent
  • Impact of North American Free Trade Agreement Renegotiation
  • Support for manufacturing
  • Land supply
  • Housing affordability

However, the biggest challenge that cut across industries was the implementation of the Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs Plan implementation in the absence of an economic impact analysis. Stakeholders through the Chamber called on the Government of Ontario to take an evidence-based approach as it considers the implementation of the Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs Plan. The plan commits to significant reforms without ensuring protection against unintended economic consequences, including job losses, rising consumer costs, and economic hardship.

“I value the input of our business community as we continue to develop public policy that will positively impact the lives of people in Ontario. Budget 2017 indicated that 98% of all new jobs since the recession in Ontario have been full time, and 78% in above-average wage industries. This positive economic activity by Ontario’s private sector demonstrates a clear commitment to good, quality jobs throughout our province,” says Hon. Liz Sandals, Ontario President of the Treasury Board. “In addition, we have made important investments in post-secondary education and training support as a means of addressing workforce shortages, a major concern for Guelph businesses. Similarly, the continued investment in key infrastructure and transportation, remain important priorities,” adds Sandals.

The Chamber’s diverse membership is uniquely positioned to provide our leaders with insight on what is needed to create the right conditions for job creation and economic growth. To that end, this was an important economic roundtable and the Chamber will be able to build upon the ideas that were generated out of it.

“The future success of Guelph and of the province of Ontario depends on us taking advantage of Guelph’s vast economic resources and ingenuity and bringing them to the next level,” says Kithio Mwanzia, President & CEO, Guelph Chamber of Commerce. “As a major crossroads for economic activity, Guelph plays a key role in the economic success of Ontario. By the business community engaging in a candid exchange of ideas with the Ontario President of the Treasury Board, there is the opportunity to provide greater direction and produce stronger results,” concludes Mwanzia.
