Canada’s Jobs Powerhouse Needs a Transit System that Gets People to Work

The Guelph Chamber of Commerce presented to Guelph City Council as part of the stakeholder engagement and public presentations process on the City Budget. A central objective of the Chamber’s continued involvement in the municipal budget process is to ensure that municipal public finance decisions are made with a lens of sound financial principles that balance support for a community’s range of services with a community’s ability to pay and remain competitive as an investment and growth location. As a means to achieve this, the Chamber presented on the pressing need for a route review to ensure that the transit system is able to better link people to jobs in the community.

“Workforce mobility plays an important role in the ability for a community to remain competitive and ensure sustained robust growth,” says Kithio Mwanzia, President and CEO of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce. “Transit therefore is an important part of the eco-system of competitiveness and plays an important role when it comes to business and economic development decision-making.”

The Chamber focused on these key areas as part of its presentation:

1.    The need for a route review for Guelph Transit that will allow the city to modernize the system and be an active part of Guelph’s competitiveness continuum.

2.    The need to ensure that property taxes did not increase beyond the rate of inflation in this budget year.

“We look forward to working with the City and continuing to provide the voice of the business community as a means to bolster growth and opportunity for Guelph,” concludes Mwanzia.
